Health insurance for foreigner for residence card

Medical insurance for foreigners from outside the Schengen Area.

Any non-Schengen resident who plans to stay in Poland - regardless of its length or purpose - must have adequate health insurance if they wish to obtain a residence card. This obligation follows directly from Polish regulations and EU regulations, which clearly indicate that a foreigner not covered by the public health care system (e.g., ZUS or NFZ) should have a valid medical policy. This document is required, among other things, at the provincial office or the Office for Foreigners, where the application for a temporary or permanent residence permit is submitted.

Who must have health insurance for a residence card?

The insurance applies to any foreigner residing in Poland who:

  • is not reported to the Social Security Administration,
  • comes to Poland as a student (check insurance for foreign students), au-pair, caregiver for the elderly, member of cultural exchange programs,
  • is planning a longer stay in Poland and is applying for a temporary or permanent residence card.

Importantly, this obligation also applies to citizens of countries that do not need a visa, but still plan to stay longer than 90 days. In such cases Insurance is necessary to legalize the stay.

Duration and scope of the policy

Health insurance for a residence card can be taken out for the period from one month to three years, which allows you to tailor the length of coverage to your planned stay. The policy can also be renew, which is beneficial for those who are waiting for an official decision or extend their stay. The minimum amount of insurance is 30,000 euros, and the scope of protection includes, among other things.

  • inpatient and outpatient treatment,
  • diagnostic tests,
  • Purchase of medicines and dressing supplies,
  • Medical transport and repatriation,
  • Dental assistance (up to PLN 400),
  • transportation of the deceased or funeral expenses within the Republic of Poland

Confirmation of insurance - what documents are required?

To confirm the possession of health insurance when applying for a residence card, a foreigner must present one of the recognized documents -. current private insurance policy (valid on the date of the decision), contract with the National Health Fund with confirmation of payment of premiums, ZUS RCA declaration for the last month, entry in the insurance card or foreign policy translated into Polish.
This document must be in Polish and up-to-date. Exceptions are spouses of Polish citizens and persons under international protection.
It is also worth considering extension of standard insurance - NNW (accidental injury), liability in private life (e.g., for damage caused to third parties) or protection for physical labor or extreme sports can be added. This makes the policy even better suited to the lifestyle and needs of the insured person.
