2025 Travel Insurance Rankings – The Best Deals

It’s not worth choosing a travel insurance policy based solely on its ranking. Without a common travel profile, identical dates, destination, coverage amounts, and scope of coverage extensions, it’s impossible to fairly identify a single „best” offer. Therefore, instead of creating a superficial ranking, we compare selected, documented elements of the General Insurance Conditions (OWU) of three insurers: Generali, TUZ Ubezpieczenia, and Uniqa. We also show you how to use this information to make your own decision before your trip.

The most important conclusion is simple: A ranking without a common methodology is inconclusive, which policy will be appropriate for a specific person. The following factors are of key importance: scope of coverage, insurance plan, sum insured, sublimits, exclusions, and the claims process. Only after analyzing these elements can you reliably compare premiums for identical coverage terms.

Why don't we rank them „from best to worst”?”

The word „ranking” suggests that each offer has been evaluated according to the same criteria. In practice, the result depends on who is traveling, where they are going, how long they will be away, and what kind of protection they need.

The price only makes sense if the assumptions are identical. The premium for a single person is not a reliable indicator for a family, and the basic plan should not be compared to the extended plan as if they offered the same coverage.

The comparison is based on General Terms and Conditions from different years: Generali’s General Terms and Conditions are effective as of June 23, 2022; Uniqa’s document is from 2025; and TUZ Ubezpieczenia’s General Terms and Conditions from 2026. These documents allow us to describe specific provisions, but they do not provide a complete picture of the entire market on any given day. Nor are they current premium calculations. For this reason, we do not rank the products or label them as „cheapest” or „best.”.

If you'd like to see a broader set of criteria, read the guide on this topic, How to Choose an Insurance Policy in 2026. Treat each comparison as a starting point for analysis, not as an automatic recommendation.

What the General Terms and Conditions of the three products state

Generali „With Travel in Mind”

The „Generali: With Travel in Mind” General Terms and Conditions, effective June 23, 2022, consist of separate sections covering medical expenses and travel assistance services for trips abroad, as well as coverage for accidents. This is information about the document’s structure and the separate coverage areas, not proof that every plan option includes identical benefits.

When evaluating this proposal, therefore, we must move from the general description to the specifics of the relevant option. The module name does not replace the protection conditions. You should check the total amount, sub-limits, and exclusions specific to the contract you are entering into.

TUZ Insurance „Safe Travel”

The 2026 „Safe Travel” General Terms and Conditions specify, among other things, that damages, conditions, or events that were known, foreseeable, intentional, or expected as of the date the contract was concluded are excluded. The document also describes an exception regarding the exacerbation of symptoms of pre-existing medical conditions, but only in the cases and to the extent specified in the insurance policy.

One should not conclude from this that every tightening of restrictions is protected. This exception must be read in conjunction with the full General Terms and Conditions and the applicable variant.. Individuals for whom health is a key consideration should carefully review the definitions, scope, and limitations before entering into a contract.

Additional context is provided in a separate Comparison of Travel Insurance Policies from TUZ and Europ Assistance. However, do not apply the information from another article to your current policy without checking the documents specific to the plan you have selected.

Uniqa: Four Options and Various Coverage Amounts

Uniqa’s 2025 General Terms and Conditions for Travel Insurance list the following plans: Basic, Extended, Optimal, and Maximum. They differ in terms of coverage, insurance amounts, guarantee amounts, and sublimits. The settings for one variant do not automatically apply to the others.

In the plan options table, the coverage limits for medical treatment and emergency assistance are 300,000 PLN in the Basic plan, 750,000 PLN in the Extended plan, 1,250,000 PLN in the Optimal plan, and 2,500,000 PLN in the Maximum plan. These are the coverage amounts, not the policy prices. The highest number alone does not fully describe all the benefits or limitations; the decision must also be based on the scope and sub-limits of the specific plan.

These three examples do not constitute a ranking. Rather, they illustrate why comparing only names or a single figure can lead to the wrong choice.

How to Choose the Right Travel Insurance Policy

First, describe your trip, and only then look at the offers. Set your criteria once and don’t change them while comparing options. The same profile should be used for every quote. Otherwise, any difference in the premium may be due to changes in your information rather than the product’s terms and conditions.

In practice, it's a good idea to follow these four steps:

  1. Determine your destination and itinerary. Note down your destination, departure time, number of travelers, and planned activities.
  2. Compare the corresponding options. Make sure you're comparing similar coverage options, not the basic plan with the comprehensive one.
  3. Read the totals along with the sublimits. The total amount alone does not indicate how much coverage is allocated to each benefit.
  4. Read the exclusions and obligations. These documents explain when you may not be eligible for benefits and what steps to take after an incident.

If you are preparing documents related to your stay in the Schengen Area, it may be helpful to discuss Schengen visas for foreign nationals. This objective does not change the rule: the policy must reflect the traveler’s actual situation, not just look good on paper.

Imagine two people traveling to the same destination. One is planning a relaxing vacation, while the other has completely different plans for activities. The price calculated for the first profile doesn’t meet the needs of the second person. This is a realistic reason not to simply copy the „winner” of the ranking, but to compare offers based on your own preferences and needs.

What to Check Before Making a Purchase and After an Incident

Before signing the contract, make a note of the plan you’ve chosen and review its documents. Check the territorial coverage, coverage limits, sub-limits, exclusions, and the procedures to follow after an incident. Keep your policy and the information needed to file a claim. This will help you avoid having to look up the terms of the contract in a stressful situation.

In the event of a claim, the scope of the required documentation depends on the incident. Generali’s General Terms and Conditions for Accident Insurance require that the documents needed to assess the claim be preserved, including a description of the medical treatment with test results, and, depending on the circumstances, other evidence as well, such as a police report or an occupational safety and health report. Document the course of events from the very beginning and keep any documents that support the circumstances of the case.

Wiener’s 2024 Travel Insurance General Terms and Conditions stipulate that, after a claim is filed, the insurer may request—depending on the type of claim—among other things, medical records, an inventory of damaged property, confirmation of a police report, witness statements, cost estimates, or invoices. Not every document is required in every case, so you should follow the procedure applicable to the specific incident and your policy.

A practical checklist before making a purchase:

  • Trip details: All calculations were performed for the same direction, period, and number of people.
  • Option: The proposals being compared have a clearly defined scope.
  • Limits: The grand total was verified along with the sublimits.
  • Exclusions: The provisions relevant to health and the travel plan were read.
  • Procedure: It's clear where to find the instructions and what documentation may be required.

The most common questions

Is it possible to identify the best travel insurance policy for everyone?

No. Without a single profile, common criteria, and calculations performed at the same time, there is no basis for a universal podium. The best choice depends on the specific trip and the terms and conditions of the option.

Does the highest coverage amount always mean the broadest coverage?

You shouldn't assume that. The total must be read in conjunction with the coverage limits, sublimits, and exclusions. Uniqa's policy options show that differences can apply to several elements at once, not just a single figure.

Is the sum insured the price of the policy?

No. The amounts of 300,000 PLN, 750,000 PLN, 1,250,000 PLN, and 2,500,000 PLN indicated in the Uniqa options discussed are coverage limits for medical expenses and emergency assistance, not premiums.

Is a pre-existing condition always covered?

Such a rule cannot be accepted. The General Terms and Conditions of TUZ Insurance describe an exclusion regarding pre-existing medical conditions and a conditional exception for the exacerbation of symptoms within specific parameters. The specific terms of the contract being entered into are decisive.

What documents might be needed after a claim?

It depends on the type of incident. You may need medical records, invoices, cost estimates, information about damaged property, or confirmations from the relevant authorities. It’s a good idea to find out in advance Mistakes Made When Choosing a Schengen Insurance Policy, so as not to put off reviewing the required documents until after the incident.

Is it worth comparing only the price?

No. Compare premiums only after ensuring that the coverage is comparable. A cheaper option may involve a different plan, coverage limit, or set of benefits, so the price alone isn't enough to make a decision.

Conclusion and Next Steps

A fair comparison of travel insurance policies doesn’t start with assigning categories. It starts with identical travel details, comparable coverage options, and an analysis of the general terms and conditions. These documents reveal different ways of describing the scope of coverage, coverage options, coverage limits, exclusions, and procedures. They do not provide a basis for a price ranking, but they help you figure out what questions to ask before making a purchase.

Prepare your trip details, select the coverage you need, compare the coverage amounts and sublimits, and review the exclusions. Then, run the calculations based on the same assumptions.
